Zue is one of the main characters in UFO Epsilon.

He is a small robot and Dash’s only companion since birth. Said to be a “nanny bot,” Zue is peculiar for having a seemingly advanced AI, capable of behaving and developing as any other sentient being. Not only is he Dash’s caretaker, but also his only friend for most of his development. Although he tries to be strict for the sake of Dash’s well being, he can be a bit of a pushover and easily persuaded to stand down if it’ll make Dash happier.

History

Zue was created on Lacrosa by Javelin for the purpose of being Dash‘s guardian. He is a recent model of utility robot often referred to as “nanny bots,” which are specialized for caring for and incubating Lacrosian eggs. Unlike other robots of the same model, he has a much more robust intelligence — usually, the robots have only basic AI and can’t do anything outside their intended function.

Zue accompanied Javelin while they were fleeing Lacrosa and Dash was still an unhatched egg. Dash hatched during the journey to Earth, and once they arrived both he and Zue were left in the care of Zech before Javelin departed from the planet.

To keep Dash hidden from the rest of the Lacrosian colony, Zech transferred him and Zue to a human couple who acted as surrogate parents. Zue raised Dash for the most part, since his human foster parents were not familiar with raising an infant Lacrosian. The two of them grew up nearly isolated from everything else, and despite being outgrown Zue stays loyally by Dash’s side and his one friend and companion.

Spoiler

The reason Zue has such an advanced and lifelike AI is because he was formed through a process called “consciousness digitization,” which is a procedure of questionable ethics where a sentient being has their consciousness replicated in a digital form. The “donor” of his consciousness was Dart. The plan he formed with Javelin for fleeing Lacrosa and hiding Dash from the Fyceran Court meant they would have to hide Dash and go their separate ways in order to minimize the chances of his discovery.

Not wanting to abandon his only child, Dart convinced Javelin to make a digital replica of his consciousness and insert it into a robot. With a lack of any better options, it ended up being a nanny bot and that is how Zue was born.

Technically, Zue IS Dart, retaining all of his memories up until the moment he was duplicated. Most products of the process don’t end up turning out well, becoming warped after losing senses that can only be poorly mimicked by mechanical bodies, or in some case lost completely. On top of that the knowledge that they are a copy of a living person… or perhaps the one remaining in the original body is the copy? Both are ultimately true, since they were literally the same person until they were separated. But it isn’t hard to see why the one living in a completely different body would end up having a crisis and become unstable, even if they were at first a willing participant in the process. The experience cannot be truly understood until it is done, and by then it’s too late.
