Sera is one of the main characters in UFO Epsilon.

Sera is a travelling investigative journalist and photographer, most of her income coming from freelance work. Although born on Earth, she feels she has no home she’s tied to and prefers making a living by traveling across the galaxy. She enjoys the free roaming lifestyle, but can’t help but feel she’s trying to run away from something. Due to her talents, she has a tendency to stick her nose in places it doesn’t belong, and has a natural sense of curiosity. She usually stays cheerful and would rather not have anyone see her on the melancholy side.

History

Sera was born on earth in the year 2083 somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. She grew up in a rather low-income family, raised as an only child by her single mother. Her father died in an accident while working for Terrena Corp shortly after she was born. In her early childhood, she met Neva; despite their differences they became nearly inseparable friends and stayed close up through the end of high school.

Sera had a natural talent for things such as writing and photography as well as an innate curiosity. Starting in middle school she took  passionate roles as part of the school newspaper and the yearbook committee. Her primary interest was in research and investigation, and she ended up a bit infamous among her classmates for her ability to dig up their secrets.

Her most groundbreaking discovery was when in her junior year she revealed one of the teachers would coerce students into sleeping with them in exchange for improving their grades. The story she wrote was published in mainstream news outlets and the teacher was removed and taken into custody. Feeling like she had been able to bring the scumbag to justice, she was inspired to pursue investigative journalism even further.

After high school, Sera attended community college on Earth to pursue an associates journalism degree since she couldn’t afford university, while Neva attended an academy on Dreampolia, separating the two significantly for the first time. However, Sera dropped out before the end of the first year to take care of her mother who had fallen ill.

Not long after, Sera’s mom passed due to complications. After a long period of mourning, Sera ended up selling the house, car, and getting rid of all their belongings since she didn’t have the means to continue paying for them. With the money she gets from the sales, she decided to purchase a used Pinnacle Liberty, since it was both a vehicle and large enough to live fairly comfortably in, even if a bit rundown.

Sera attempted to hold down various crappy jobs but nothing quite worked for her. She finally decided to leave Earth and travel for a while, not sure of what to do with herself. She never had many chances to get off planet and figured she can continue college after experiencing more of the galaxy.

Once she started traveling, she found it refreshing and freeing not to be rooted to one place. She thought she would spend a few months away from Earth, but she ended up delaying her return for more than a year. She found it peaceful to be alone in space, and it gave her lots of time to work through her thoughts.

She decides to continue that lifestyle; her savings dry up but she finds she can use her talents writing articles about her travels and selling them to publications or even just monetizing her own blog – however, she sometimes has to go out of her way or even endanger herself to write about something new and interesting. She loves visiting the smaller and lesser-known places especially. With her freelance work, she’s able to sustain herself with necessities like fuel, food, and ship maintenance and because her lifestyle is fairly simple, it doesn’t take much to cover.

Although she feels good at the moment, she’s never really stopped to process her feelings. Traveling has been a good getaway and she enjoys it, but running from her troubles only lasts so long. She harbors a resentment for Terrena Corp and the cruelty of capitalism in general, but is frustrated with her inability to do anything about it. She sees it as the cause of death for both of her parents. Her father needlessly endangered at work, and her mother dying from an illness that can be treated by modern technology and medicine, but they were unable to afford it.

When she sees people in need, her first instinct is to help whether she is asked or not. Although she means well, she can end up overstepping boundaries and forcing herself into the business of others uninvited.

Relationships

Neva Rio

Sera and Neva have been best friends since childhood, although they lost touch with each other after high school, only sending occasional long distance messages to each other. Not long after Neva returns to Earth after college, Sera decides to drop in for a visit.
